I checked my notes...I really cannot believe I have not written about Tablas Creek until now. Simply put, they are one of the most important wineries in the United States. Tablas Creek is a pioneer of California’s Rhône movement. Founded in 1989, it was formed by the collaboration of two families renowned in the wine community: the Perrin family of Château de Beaucastel and the Haas family of Vineyard Brands. After a four-year search, the partners chose Paso Robles, California for its many similarities to the Southern Rhône and began the lengthy process of importing vine cuttings from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, building a grapevine nursery, and creating an estate vineyard from the ground up.
The estate is the first Regenerative Organic Certified vineyard in the world. They have farmed organically since their inception, with certification coming in 2003, and have been Biodynamic since 2010 (certified in 2017). They've also been pioneers in alternative packaging (as many of you know), producing runs of their Patelin Blanc and Rose in bag-in-box format to further reduce their carbon footprint.
Dang—but the wines are great too! The estate is home to all thirteen(!) permitted varieties in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and, generally, produces Rhône style blends, ranging from Côtes du Rhône-esque to Châteauneuf-du-Pape killers. We will tour many of them, along with a single variety ringer, all guided by second generation leader of the estate, Jason Haas. Jason was practically etched by the mistral and has garrigue in his veins. (He is also an AMAZING writer—check out the Tablas Creek blog.)
Join us Monday, May 5th, from 5pm - 6:30pm to see just what I mean. Chef Madeline will be keeping us locked in as we explore with three finely tuned Cali-French inspired bites. Sign up above!
